Description
The Woods Transit 11.6 Echo presents a rare opportunity to acquire a thoughtfully conceived cruising catamaran by highly respected British multihull designer Richard Woods. Created with enjoyable sailing and practical family cruising firmly in mind, the design offers an appealing balance of generous accommodation, comfort and capability, not simply a voluminous catamaran designed around the charter market.
The Transit combines relatively light displacement with a moderate, easily handled sail plan. Richard Woods describes the design as offering the sailing qualities of his smaller and well-regarded Eclipse and Sagitta catamarans, but with considerably greater accommodation and load-carrying ability. The protected centre cockpit was intended to provide security at sea and a more comfortable motion, while the saloon offers standing headroom and good all-round visibility.
Accounts from other Transit owners and sailors suggest that this spaciousness does not come at the expense of enjoyable sailing. On an early trial in approximately five knots of wind, one Transit reportedly made around five knots to windward and was praised for tacking quickly and steering well. Another observer described a Transit sailing comfortably at 12–14 knots in winds of 20–26 knots, while Richard Woods recorded the design sailing to windward at approximately 32 degrees to the apparent wind during an extended cruise. As always, actual speeds will depend on the individual boat, loading, sail condition and sea state. 11.8m centre cockpit ocean cruiser
The design also has genuine cruising history behind it. Richard Woods and his wife sailed a Transit from the Chesapeake south through the Intracoastal Waterway and onwards to the Bahamas, living aboard and cruising the islands for several months. During the voyage, he reported relaxed reaching at around eight knots with the boat steering herself, good light-wind ability and particularly strong windward sailing. On one 17-day period with visiting crew, they covered more than 300 miles and anchored in 15 different locations, an excellent illustration of the Transit’s blend of comfortable living space and practical cruising ability. Review of 2010
With her combination of generous accommodation, reassuring cockpit arrangement and credible sailing ability, Echo offers an appealing route into comfortable multihull cruising. She should suit buyers looking for the space to live aboard, entertain family and friends or undertake longer adventures, while retaining the responsive sailing qualities for which Richard Woods’ designs are known.

Woods Transit 11.6 'Echo'
Built locally in 2016 by Dennis Gale to a Richard Woods design, Echo is an 11.6-metre cruising catamaran commissioned by her current owners. She has been lightly used by the couple, wintered ashore at the Multihull Centre every year since launch, and maintained and progressively upgraded throughout their ownership.
Her foam-sandwich construction incorporates solid GRP below the waterline, with an ash and sycamore interior. Stub keels and twin daggerboards combine shallow draught with improved directional control and manoeuvrability. Draught ranges from approximately 0.9 metres with the boards raised to 1.6 metres with them lowered.
The sail inventory includes a 2024 Highwater flat-top cruising-laminate mainsail, a Crusader Mylar genoa, an asymmetric spinnaker and a Code 0, together with an unused storm jib and trysail. The downwind sails have seen very little use, and the sails have been serviced annually. A removable inner forestay accommodates the storm jib, while an electric winch assists with mainsail handling.
Twin 21hp Nanni inboard diesels provide propulsion through shaft drives. Both have been serviced annually, most recently in spring 2026, with recorded engine hours of 410 and 657.
Accommodation offers three double cabins, including two king-size berths, with additional saloon berths bringing capacity to eight. The spacious deck saloon has a fixed table with folding leaves, a navigation station and a large wet hanging locker. A linear galley in the port hull includes a four-burner gas hob, separate eye-level oven and grill, and a fridge with freezer compartment. Two heads, two showers, generous storage and headroom of approximately 1.9 metres or more provide a practical layout for extended stays aboard.
Domestic equipment includes two independent Eberspächer diesel heating systems, pressurised hot water heated by calorifier or immersion heater, shore power, an inverter and solar charging. Navigation equipment includes a Raymarine chartplotter, radar, AIS and Evolution autopilot, alongside wind, speed and depth instruments and an Icom VHF radio.
