Hulls and Handling

The Dazcat Ocean Cruiser (DOC) draws from decades of sailing, design and build experiene it provides outstanding performance and exceptional average speeds.

The 13:1 waterline length to beam ratio, super slippery  hulls and exceptionally light 12 tonnes lightship with maximum displacement of 16 tonnes the DOC is easily driven. Weight and distribution are carefully factored, as are loads. The lifting carbon daggerboards help to ensure superb upwind performance.

Sail control lines run to dedicated electric forward and rewinding winches that can be remote operated. Safety, comfort and convenience define everything about the DOC and the automated system including remote sail handling and autopilot are an important element in risk mitigation. The fingertip responsiveness of the helm and the warm smoothness of the carbon wheels means switching off the autopilot is always a time to look forward to.

Every detail is by design to provide this hard-to-find experience.

  • Safety, speed, strength and simplicity
  • Shelter from the elements while maximising your enjoyment of them
  • Ease of crew interactions whether sailing, relaxing, using communal areas or finding necessary personal spaces
  • Sufficient storage for personal and general supplies
  • Carrying capacity
  • Self-sufficiency and efficiency allows longer passages and time in remote locations
  • Manoeuvrability in marinas
  • Access shallower anchorages
  • Equipment durability
  • Availability of spares in more remote areas and support wherever you are…
  • All beautifully formed and finished, wrapped in the naked Dazcat skin.

In short, an exceptional boat ideal for blue water cruising.

Handling the boat - ease, safety and enjoyment of use

Now, imagine yourself anywhere on the boat as it’s sailing – lying on the net perhaps, or snuggled up with the family in the saloon, seated at the interior helm station next to your loved one, alone on the aft deck or enjoying the cooling breeze in the forward cockpit…Wherever you are, you can trim all the sails and adjust boat heading using your remote control. You can even stand on deck to park it if you prefer  that over the masthead cameras and good all-around view from the internal helm station.

Of course, to fully enjoy the truly sensational Dazcat Ocean experience of fingertip control you can always turn off the autopilot. The main helm and navigation station is comfortably situated forward in the saloon and provides great visibility while fully sheltered from the elements. Opening doors and windows leading to the forward cockpit mean you can still get that open air feeling when you want it. The stunning carbon wheel pivots from side to side to vary your position and allow you to helm from the open doorway, or for two people to sit together. There are also also twin wheels in the aft cockpit for those moments when you just want the full Dazcat sailing experience.

Once comfortably seated in your position of choice and the autopilot is off, the warm polished carbon under your fingers is superbly smooth to touch and immensely light to handle even when cruising at speed…The instant response even under load adds to the immense pleasure of sailing the Dazcat Ocean Cruiser.

To achieve this the interior helm station and carbon wheel is linked to carbon shaft and cable drives directly onto quadrants connected with a physical carbon tie bar to the all-carbon rudders and self-aligning bearings.

To feel the wind on your face you can open the windows, sail remotely from the forward cockpit or take the wheel in your hand on the aft deck.

Living on board

The integrated saloon is ergonomically designed for maximum comfort and practicality with good visuals and communication around the boat. By day the saloon is bathed in natural light, the glass windows shaded to avoid excessive heat when in the tropics. By night the mood choice is yours, from a selection of LED settings for recessed spots and downlighting. A large overhead skylight with a blind as standard gives clear view to the mainsail.

Distinct zones including pilotage position, saloon seating, table and galley are clear within the layout, each with its own function yet the overall feel allows smooth transition and communications.

Full-width sliding glass doors to the covered aft cockpit greatly extend the galley and saloon and add to the indoor/outdoor living feel. Crucially, the layout also means you can easily find that all important personal space away from others when you want it. The two cockpits and cabin layouts mean this is always possible. The forward cockpit is a place where deliciously you can also sleep out under the stars…

Cabin options depend on owner preferences. In this three-cabin model, the owner cabin has a large bed, plenty of storage of different kinds, seating and a small work-station for private online meetings. The other hull has both a double cabin and a convertible bunk room to accommodate shorter term visitors and provide flexibility for storage and systems zones. We are also happy to talk about two and four cabin options.

The galley, based on the golden triangle of kitchen design, is big, sociable and has plenty of storage. It’s designed to be always efficient and useable. A two-burner electric hob and combi microwave/ oven/ grill/ steamer will meet all of your cooking needs. Add in fridge, freezer, pressure cooker, toaster, blender, kettle, coffee machine, dishwasher, and you have every pleasure a cook could possibly need. All without the hassle of gas or noise and fuel consumption of an extra generator.

Power & maintaining self-sufficiency

An expanse of vented glass and flexi-panels creates a 4 KW solar system generating power stored in an enlarged battery bank. This, along with all the boat’s systems, can be easily monitored and managed via the EmpirBus node-based system.

We will advise you of best power management practices at handover. Batteries can always be quickly recharged when necessary by engine, solar or the option of regenerative electric.

The build

We pride ourselves on the meticulous and individual care given at each stage of the build. Every boat is hand engineered by a highly skilled and passionate workforce who produce an outstanding quality and strength.

The construction uses a female hull and wet deck tooling while the coach roof is male moulded to reduce gel weight. An advanced composites infusion process using epoxy glass with PVC cores provides the basis. Carbon components and reinforcements in beam structure add strength where needed and the Kevlar reinforced foam sandwich hulls are vinylester gel finished or wrapped.

More sustainable and environmentally friendly finishes in the interior maintain the clean, light and easy to maintain style. Limited headlinings and reduced double surfacing also helps to keep weight down and makes access easier for necessary checks and maintenance.

Our customer service is exceptional and an optional service plan provides technical help, advice and support while you cruise if you need it, regardless of where you are in the world. There’s also a Dazcat owners’ community where you’ll be made very welcome.

Two build slots are presently available for a 2024 launch. In return you’ll discover all the joys and pleasures of owning a Dazcat Ocean Cruiser.
