Cafe Abundance
Aims to minimise food waste and feed people who need food. It does this through supplying surplus food stuffs and providing cooked meals via a Pay-As-You-Feel scheme.
Today, the Multihull Centre welcomed the connected Cafe Abundance Compost Project to the site, where we will provide storage.
What is Cafe Abundance?
Cafe Abundance is a local initiative. Its primary aims are to:
- Minimise food waste
- Feed people who need food by supplying surplus food stuffs and providing cooked meals via a Pay-As-You-Feel scheme
- Raise awareness and education regarding healthier and sustainable eating – providing information and guidance via ‘Cafe Abundance Cooks’ courses
- Set an example concerning resource availability and use.
This is achieved through the collection of surplus food from local retailers and outlets and then re-distributed into the commnity.
How did it begin?
In 2016 Jemma Morgan, the founder, was looking to start a project which fitted into her ethos of waste reduction and food. She came across Adam Smith’s initiative The Real Junk Food Project, it ticked all the right boxes and Cafe Abundance was born!
Jemma started in her own home kitchen and used St James’s Church in Torpoint as the location of the first pop-up cafe, as the project grew so did the locations (Liskeard, Rame Peninsula).
As of March 2020, COVID-19 brought the pop-up cafes to a halt, however Jemma adapted and overcame this obstacle by organising local deliveries and collections.

Cafe Abundance Compost…
Throughout, Jemma was highly aware that food was still being wasted. For example, peelings and unusable food stuffs.
She recognised that this was a wasted resource, hence the idea of creating a local compostable scheme – Cafe Abundance Compost. This local project will help to eliminate food waste entirely from Cafe Abundance and offer local businesses the opportunity to partake in the disposal of their food waste for a fee.
Cafe Abundance Compost aims to:
- Promote a circular economy – utilising food waste to provide a product that can be reused
- Promote environmental awareness – reduce carbon footprint by providing local food waste collection for local businesses
- Provide 100% natural, nutritious compost to increase soil fertility, enabling increased biodiversity and strong ecosystem services, providing resilience to climate change
- Input into the local economy with job opportunities
How can people support it?
Local businesses who create food waste can subscribe to a weekly/fortnightly collection and support the local initiative over the commercial route. People can purchase the compost and be part of a grass-roots initiative for the local community and environment.
Who can benefit from it and how?
This project benefits the local economy, society and environment. It encourages people/businesses to engage in their resource use, promotes environmental awareness and helps promote economic development in the local area by supplying opportunities for employment.

Lots!
We are and have always been community centred. We also care about our environment and supporting circular economy principles – If you’re interested you can find links to our sustainability goals and some of the other projects we support. We happen to have lots of space, so it’s perfect to be able to offer storage facility for the bio-composting. Finally, anyone who has watched any of our Dazcat Catamaran videos or been to a Multihull Centre Party, will know that food features high on our agenda. We like to eat well and to share it with others, so all together this is a perfect project for us to support!
